FAQs

We’ve Got Answers

Chances are, your questions about orientation are ones that most new students have. Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to welcoming you to UVA!

Most Common FAQs

Will UVA offer a new student Summer Orientation programming in July?

Yes, we will be offering an online summer orientation program in July. The bulk of the summer program will focus on course advising and registration. However, we will also offer new virtual events and activities throughout the summer to help connect you with your peers, begin to build community, meet the student Orientation Leaders, and learn more about what to expect when you arrive on Grounds. More information about the schedule will be available soon.

Since Summer Orientation is virtual, do I still need to register for a session?

You will not need to register for a Summer Orientation session this year. Your school of enrollment will assign your course enrollment date, and you will receive more information directly from your school of enrollment about that process. On this enrollment date, students will learn about curricular requirements, receive course scheduling advising, and register for their courses. Changing your enrollment date is not an option. Be sure to check your UVA email address in the coming months to make sure you don’t miss this information!

Please see our Enrollment Dates page for the lists of dates by year and school of enrollment.

Will Wahoo Welcome programming still occur when the Fall 2020 semester begins?

Yes, we are creating an expanded Wahoo Welcome program for all incoming first-year students! A variety of events and programs are being planned for the first few weeks of the fall 2020 academic term to help prepare you for life at UVA, acclimate you to Grounds, build connections with your peers, and help you find your place and chart your course at the University. Wahoo Welcome events and activities will be planned and conducted consistent with the latest guidelines on public health and safety. Check the Wahoo Welcome section of this website later this summer for updates.

Will there be programing for families?

While our top priority is making sure new students have all of the information they need to be successful when classes begin, we know that family members are an important part of a student’s transition to UVA. We encourage family members to view the resources we share throughout the summer on our website and social media outlets. There will be updates posted throughout the summer months. It is also critical that new students regularly check their UVA email, as that is the primary communication tool we will use with students.

Does UVA charge an orientation fee? What does the orientation fee cover?

Yes, both in-person and virtual programs require resources. The Orientation fee ($214/first-years; $130/transfers) encompasses not only your summer experience, but also many new programs associated with your transition in the fall. Programs like summer orientation, Wahoo Welcome, and other fall programs are all funded by the Orientation fee, as are the student Orientation Leaders and our full-time staff who manage these programs. The orientation fee is billed with your tuition and other fees, and financial aid can be used to cover this expense.
