Orientation Leader Selection Process

Selection Process Overview

Be sure to see the Orientation Leader Selections page for the selection timeline and schedule of mandatory 2018 dates.

STEP 1: Attend the Information Session (optional)

Applicants are encouraged to attend the January 23 information session to learn about the Orientation Leader experience and selection process.

STEP 2: Review Selection Process Information and Application Materials

Confirm that you are available for all dates and times listed on the Orientation Leader Selections page, and note if you have any questions about the Orientation Leader position or selection process.

STEP 3: Complete the Online Application

The Orientation Leader application informs us about an applicant’s experiences and motivation for becoming an Orientation Leader. You will be asked to provide a short answer (no more than 250 words) on all essay questions. Applicants are encouraged to prepare responses in a Word document and copy/paste answers into the online application.
 
In addition to completing the application, you need to have a recommender complete the reference form.  Please select a recommender who has knowledge of your leadership style, communication skills, and professionalism, and can speak to who you are as a person.The recommender should be a leader, mentor, advisor, coach, employer, professor, etc. It’s not a good idea to select a family member, hallmate, friend, or peer.
 
All parts of the application must be completed and submitted by Sunday, January 28 at 4:00 p.m. References are due by Monday, January 29 at 4:00 p.m.

STEP 4: Participate in a Group Interview (pending invitation)

The group interview process is designed to assess each applicant’s communication and listening skills, flexibility, maturity, cooperation, initiative, and leadership style in a team environment. Applicants will be notified on Tuesday, January 30 if they are invited to participate in the group interview. Groups are made up of 10-12 applicants and are facilitated by a former Orientation Leader and a University faculty or staff member.
 
Group interviews will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 9:00 a.m.–noon. Dress is business casual.

STEP 5: Individual Interview (pending invitation)

Select applicants will be invited to the final phase of the interview process, the individual interview. These will be conducted by Orientation & New Student Programs staff and former Orientation Leaders. The individual interview process is designed to provide insight regarding candidates’ experiences, qualifications, and understanding of the University and the Orientation Leader role. Dress is business casual.
