For Spring Transfers

Mid-Year Orientation

The University sponsors a one-day Mid-Year Orientation in January for students who transfer for the spring semester. Transferring mid-year can present special challenges, and we want you to be aware of important programs, opportunities, and deadlines as you prepare for life as a UVA student. The information below will help you get started with the process.

Mid-Year Orientation Schedule

Mid-Year Orientation takes place in January just before the beginning of the spring semester. Incoming transfer students do not need to register for orientation in advance. Mid-Year Orientation is only for students and does not contain any information pertinent to parents/guests.

During orientation, you learn about academic and social resources at the University and receive your academic faculty advisor's contact information. The day concludes with a bus tour of Grounds and an optional reception in the Dome Room of the Rotunda. You can visit our 2017 Mid-Year Orientation page to see the kinds of activities the day includes.

Housing

Housing & Residence Life (HRL) is happy to offer offers a variety of residence options to incoming transfer students. Living on Grounds provides the best combination of location, pricing, and being plugged in to the UVA community.

Visit our Incoming Transfer Students housing page to see housing options available to you. The website offers information about on-Grounds and off-Grounds options. To apply for on-Grounds housing, you must complete the housing application for the spring semester. If you have specific questions, contact HRL at 434.924.3736 or housing@virginia.edu.

UVA Computing ID

You'll use your UVA computing ID for almost everything involving computers at the University: email, connecting to the UVA network, and accessing the Student Information System (SIS).

To activate your computing accounts, you will need to pass the online Responsible Computing quiz with a 100% score (you can retake the test). Once you pass the quiz, you will get a temporary password to use along with your computing ID.

All official University communications will be sent to your UVA email address. If you have questions, see Information for New Students on the ITS website or contact the ITS Help Desk at 434-924-HELP (434-924-4357).

Student ID Card

You have the opportunity to have your student ID card made in the ID Card Office on the morning of orientation. If you are not available at that time, you may go to the ID Card Office on the lower level of Observatory Hill Dining Hall any weekday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Academics

You should submit your final transcripts as soon as they are available so that the dean can finalize your transfer credit evaluation. Send final transcripts to Meredith Burke at P.O. Box 400133, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4133.

You will have help finalizing your course planning when you arrive in January, but it advantageous to enroll in as many classes as possible before then. You can access the course enrollment system once your $400 admissions deposit is processed by the University.

Arts & Sciences students should review the Guide for Spring Transfers for information on topics including course registration, declaring a major, and credit evaluation.

New transfer students should schedule an appointment with their academic advisor during their first weeks at UVA.

Transfer Student Peer Advisor (TSPA) Program

All incoming transfer students are paired with a Transfer Student Peer Advisor (TSPA) to help them through the transition to UVA. TSPAs are students who are very familiar with the transfer process, because they have been through it themselves. TSPAs keep in touch with students throughout the academic year, coordinating activities for their small groups, as well as events for the entire transfer student community.
